South Holston River

Spin Fishing & Fly Fishing the South Holston River

South Holston River Fly FishingThe South Holston river is a beautiful tail-water formed at the foot of the South Holston lake dam and traveling over fourteen miles until it culminates into Boone lake. This magnificent stretch of water has become known as a trophy fishery due to it’s large population of monster Brown trout with over forty two percent being wild trout. The cold deep oxygenated waters released from the bottom of the South Holston damn keep a consistent temp average of around 52 degrees, a perfect environment for trout.

South Holston River FishingFishing the South Holston river is a year round pursuit as the constant water temp allows for active feeding environment 365 days per year. With the consistent 52 degree water temp the conditions neither become too cold or too warm any time per year to drive the local trout population metabolism into a dormant state causing down times in the fishing. Couple the the temp with a daily hatch of sulphur’s, black flies, BWO’s, Caddis and other popular aquatic insects running from early March through November and you begin to realize why Fly Fishing the South Holston river is such a joy.

Beyond the monster brown trout that bring much of the notoriety to the South Holston river as a top-notch fishery, many leave our or neglect to mention the small mount bass population that inhabit the coll constant clear water temps of the South Holston river.  These hard-hitting bass grow big and tempered and make for a formattable adversary. Whether your approach is spin fishing or fly fishing the South Holston river for it’s small mouth bass you’ll love their tenacity and locomotive like strikes. Toss any type of top-water lure or popper in or around the aquatic grass beds and you’re almost guaranteed to induce that famous bass predatory instinct which bring about those ferocious top-water slams.

South Holston River Fishing - Smallmouth BassBe it monster brown trout or fat small mouths, the South Holston river is both a fly fishing and spin fishing dream. The river has many opportunities to wade fish when power isn’t being produced. However, access is limited due to property lines being permitted down to the waters edge. So be certain you’re welcomed or ask prior permission before just traipsing along the river’s banks. The best way to cover more water and fish the spots others aren’t allowed to is by renting one of our South Holston river fishing boats and exploring the river with unlimited access to all it’s “secret spots”.

Watauga River

Spin Fishing & Fly Fishing the Watauga River

watauga river fly fishingBeginning at the base of the Wilbur dam, the Watauga river forms as a tail-water and flowing some sixteen miles through the town of Elizabethton, TN. This magnificent stretch of water is one of only a very short list designated as a trophy section trout fishery in the state of Tennessee. The fly fishing along the Watauga river is top-notch to say the least. This fishery has held more 20″ and bigger rainbow trout that nearly any other river in the mountains of Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia.

The water temp in the Watauga river is maintained at a consistent 53 to 54 degrees due to it’s source coming from the depths of the Watauga lake. This makes the Fly Fishing along the Watauga river a year-round pursuit. Keeping the water temp at just the perfect range ensures the trout population never experience a dormant period of their metabolism as in natural wild trout waters. This year round feeding is another attribute that explain the large population of monster Rainbow trout in the Watauga river.
